Missteroid (asteroid undoom)

Here be some kinda doom…

I may be pretty late at seeing this but i apologise i have been at work.

It seems there may have been certain doom tommorow (Monday) as there has been a giant asteroid spotted heading our way.
The space rock is going to just miss us but will reach within 11,000 miles of the surface. Apparently the telegraph states it as coming ’23 times closer than the moon’ to me that doesn’t make sense, but anyway the asteroid will reach within 11,000 miles of the surface which is close enough to be spotted by some telescopes.

Even if it did enter the atmospere an asteroid expert has said ‘We are certain that it will miss us, but if it did enter the atmosphere, an asteroid this size would mostly burn up in a brilliant fireball, possibly scattering a few meteorites.’ Which is good by me. This asteroid was only spotted wednesday in New Mexico and is only between 10 and 50 yards wide.

Another asteroid has been spotted to come by on November 8th and from what experts say it is 400 metres wide weighing 50 million tons and is expected to fly within the moons orbit, this will pass by at a distance of 201,000 miles thankfully. This one is the largest object to approach us so close that folks know about.

Phew…

To be honest though this original artice does make with the fear-mongering.

Memory Implant / Nanna

This kind of reminds me of the film Johnny Mnemonic. I think its just because of the stored memory information and recall thing. Awesome film, Dolph Lundgren and Keanu Reeves, a film with those guys has to be good right?

Anyway…

Scientists have designed a brain implant that restored lost memory function and strengthened recall of new information in laboratory rats — a crucial first step in the development of so-called neuroprosthetic devices to repair deficits from dementia, stroke and other brain injuries in humans.

I hope this gets developed for Humans as i believe there is a really high probability i will get dementia as most of my grandparents/great-grandparents etc have had it.

The Link to the whole article is here. That is if you want it from the source.

Though still a long way from being tested in humans, the implant demonstrates for the first time that a cognitive function can be improved with a device that mimics the firing patterns of neurons. In recent years neuroscientists have developed implants that allow paralyzed people to move prosthetic limbs or a computer cursor, using their thoughts to activate the machines. In the new work, being published Friday, researchers at Wake Forest University and the University of Southern California used some of the same techniques to read neural activity. But they translated those signals internally, to improve brain function rather than to activate outside appendages.

“It’s technically very impressive to pull something like this off, given our current level of technology,” said Daryl Kipke, a professor of bioengineering at the University of Michigan who was not involved in the experiment. “We are just scratching the surface when it comes to interacting with the brain, but this experiment shows what’s possible and the great potential of interacting with the brain in this way.”

In a series of experiments, scientists at Wake Forest led by Sam A. Deadwyler trained rats to remember which of two identical levers to press to receive water; the animals first saw one of the two levers appear and then (after being distracted) had to remember to press the other lever to be rewarded. Repeated training on this task teaches rats the general rule, but in each trial the animal has to remember which lever appeared first, to inform the later choice.

The rats were implanted with a tiny array of electrodes, which threaded from the top of the head down into two neighboring pieces of the hippocampus, a structure that is crucial for forming these new memories, in rats as in humans. The two slivers of tissue, called CA1 and CA3, communicate with each other as the brain learns and stores new information. The device transmits these exchanges to a computer.

To test the effect of the implant, the researchers used a drug to shut down the activity of CA1. Without CA1 online, the rats could not remember which lever to push to get water. They remembered the rule — push the opposite lever of the one that first appeared — but not which they had seen first.

The researchers, having recorded the appropriate signal from CA1, simply replayed it, like a melody on a player piano — and the animals remembered. The implant acted as if it were CA1, at least for this one task.

“Turn the switch on, the animal has the memory; turn it off and they don’t: that’s exactly how it worked,” said Theodore W. Berger, a professor of engineering at U.S.C. and the lead author of the study, being published in The Journal of Neural Engineering. His co-authors were Robert E. Hampson and Anushka Goonawardena, along with Dr. Deadwyler, of Wake Forest, and Dong Song and Vasilis Z. Marmarelis of U.S.C.

In rats that did not receive the drug, new memories faded by about 40 percent after a long distraction period. But if the researchers amplified the corresponding CA1 signals using the implant, the memories eroded only about 10 percent in that time.

The authors said that with wireless technology and computer chips, the system could be easily fitted for human use. But there are a number of technical and theoretical obstacles. For one, the implant must first record a memory trace before playing it back or amplifying it; in patients with significant memory problems, those signals may be too weak. In addition, human memory is a rich, diverse neural process that involves many other brain areas, not just CA3 and CA1; implants in this area will be limited.

Still, some restored memories — Where is the bathroom? Where are the pots and pans stored? — could make a big difference in the lives of someone with dementia. “If you’re caring for someone in the house, for example,” Dr. Berger said, “it might be enough to keep the person out of the nursing home.”

On a more personal note, my Nanna has really bad dementia and has suffered many strokes and is only about 80. She keeps suffering mini strokes and is in a really bad state and cannot do anything for herself anymore. She can hardly hold her arms up and cannot eat or drink on her own. I know this is partially due to age but i feel she would just have a more enjoyable life if it wasn’t for Dementia. My family aren’t even recognisable to her anymore and this to me is just heartbreaking. To me it would seem in her mind she would think no-one visits or cares about her, as she is in a dementia nursing home. Its not a fair thing, i guess life isn’t fair. I want her last moments knowing we are there for her and love her. But at times it seems futile because she doesn’t know anything anymore. Pity nothing can be done but have her without dignity and alone. I know its more fathers day then Grandma’s day but i would like her to know i’m there and miss and love her. I don’t like dementia or the idea that i or anyone else could get it, regardless of whether i know them or not. Its just a bad thing.

Sorry about the personalness i just felt i had to get it down and out of myself.

Thanks.

Evil Urine Loving Fish

Link for video Here. This video is by Animal Discovery.

The candiru is attracted by urea, a compound found in both fish gill waste products and human urine. When this fish attacks a man’s urethra, the results are both gruesome and shocking.

This video is nasty, i’m sure everyone has heard about that fish that just seems to hate people, i’m kind of glad i don’t swim. But then again when am i ever going to go to wherever this fish lives. So that’ll be the Amazon River. According to the wikipedia page the fish can grow up to 16 inches too. Ouch. Not much more needs to be said.

River monsters.

Zombies In Leicester?

This is actually awesome. It also reminds me of thepost on the CDC website a while back about Zombie preparedness.

Are you prepared? The CDC are.

Leicester City Council ‘not ready’ for zombie attack

Zombie enthusiasts The FOI request said “councils across the kingdom” should be prepared for a potential zombie attack.

A worried member of the public has forced Leicester City Council to admit it is unprepared for a zombie invasion. The authority received a Freedom of Information request which said provisions to deal with an attack, often seen in horror films, were poor.

The “concerned citizen” said the possibility of such an event was one that councils should be aware of.

“We’ve had a few wacky ones before but this one did make us laugh,” said Lynn Wyeth, head of information governance.

The Freedom of Information Act allows a right of access to recorded information held by public authorities.

The letter is as follows:

Dear Leicester City Council, Can you please let us know what provisions you have in place in the event of a zombie invasion? Having watched several films it is clear that preparation for such an event is poor and one that councils throughout the kingdom must prepare for. Please provide any information you may have. Yours faithfully, Concerned Citizen.

Ms Wyeth said she was unaware of any specific reference to a zombie attack in the council’s emergency plan, however some elements of it could be applied if the situation arose. Other submissions to the council have included requests for records of paranormal activity and haunted buildings within the city. “To you it might seem frivolous and a waste of time… but to different people it actually means something,” said Ms Wyeth. “Everybody has their own interests and their own reasons for asking these questions.” She added high-profile cases, such as the MPs expenses scandal, has raised public awareness of the right to request information records. Ed Thurlow, who runs zombie website Terror4Fun, said he felt a zombie invasion in Leicester was highly unlikely.

“I think perhaps [the “Concerned Citizen”] has watched films like 28 Days Later a few too many times.

Right back off to watching zombie movies.

Psychic tip goes wrong.

Hunkered down in her trailer in the Texas Panhandle, a grandmother who had a vision that sparked a media circus and police search for alleged mass graves in Liberty County said she is being wronged and fears for children who may never be found.

“This is bad for people who call in a tip for something,” she told the Houston Chronicle by phone Wednesday evening. “They think they have done a good deed, and it turns around on them.”

The 48-year-old woman, who asked to only be identified by her nickname of Angel, said she never wanted any attention and fears the worldwide interest in the case will destroy her life if her identity is known publicly.

“I also have children and grandchildren,” said the woman who agreed to be interviewed only on the condition she remain anonymous. “I’ll be bombarded with media and all that. I do not like the spotlight.”

Angel described herself as a reverend for a ministry that helps the poor and the homeless, and said that while she is based in Texas, she spends much of her time traveling to do God’s work.

Sources close to an ongoing investigation confirmed Angel was truthful about her identity as well as that she’d previously shared information with law enforcement agencies in Texas.

Angel said she has had visions her entire life and after confiding with two friends who were having similar visions that three children could be in trouble, she contacted the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Monday.

Children were ‘alive’

She strongly denied telling officers that they needed to search for bodies or that anyone was dead.

“They did not act on what I told them,” she said. “My biggest concern is definitely the children,” she added. “I think they are hungry and thirsty. They are still alive.”

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on Angel’s accusations late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office said earlier in the day that it has not been able to verify any of the details provided by the tipster, including her name, location, or occupation, spokesman Rex Evans said.

And the tip she provided was false, he said.

Still, Evans said, “everything went by the book,” even though officials did not know how the tipster had come to learn about the allegedly buried bodies.

“She did not specifically go into that,” Evans said. “Not to my knowledge. I do not recall any specific details that she said she saw this or she felt this or she heard this.”

Officials were searching for the tipster, but had made no progress, he said. The woman could face a minimum charge of filing a false report or making false statements, a misdemeanor, Evans said.

The tip that led to the media frenzy, which drew attention from around the globe amid rumors that a mass grave containing up to 30 dismembered bodies had been discovered, initially came on Monday, when the tipster called the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and reported that there were several bodies of children buried on a property in Hardin.

Deputies went to the property and found nothing, but in a subsequent call Tuesday the tipster redirected officials and offered more details that led them to a home with blood on the porch and the foul odor of rotting flesh in the air.

It was not clear how many times officials had spoken with the woman in total, but they did not know after their first conversation with her that she claimed to be a psychic, Evans said.

The blood was from an injury at the residence a few weeks earlier when an AWOL soldier tried to kill himself, and the odor was from a malfunctioning deep freeze full of pork products and maggots, officials have said.

‘Got to look into it’

Officials did not discount her information when she told them she was a psychic, he said, and they followed the tip like they would any other.

Upon discovering the blood and odor at the property, deputies coordinated with the Liberty County District Attorney’s office to request a search warrant for the home. They did not inform prosecutors that their information came from a woman who claimed to be a psychic, but did note the tip and the suspicious environment at the home, Liberty County District Attorney Michael Little said.

Although Liberty County officials have drawn criticism for their response to the tip, they said the factors at the home warranted a search.

“The question is when you have information of a serious nature like that people just can’t sit on it,” Little said. You’ve got to look into it. You’ve got to try to see if a crime had been committed or not.”

Despite the tip’s source, it had to be followed up on like any other that the county receives, Evans said. The search would likely have passed unnoticed had initial media reports not erroneously reported that dozens of bodies had been discovered at the site, sparking intense interest in the investigation, he said.

“I just wish that people would understand that, as a law enforcement agency, we’re obligated to investigate things, and yesterday was simply us conducting an investigation to find out factual information,” Evans said. “There was nothing more.”

What a waste of police time. Did they think this sort of thing works like it does on TV ? She ain’t no Christopher Walken i’ll tell ya.

I believe its a good job she hasn’t bothered with the JREF million dollar challenge.
